On the way to 100 ponds in Rochefort!
Ponds in Amay
The project
Thanks to an innovative partnership between the Municipality of Amay, Natagora and Kick, citizens can now benefit from personalised support in creating a pond. A specialist can now help you prepare for the project and will come to your home to supervise the digging so that no questions remain unanswered. All you have to do is buy the materials and invite friends, neighbours and family to lend a hand! Five participatory projects have already been organised in Amay, and nearly a dozen are planned for 2025.

How are the criteria of the objective met?
Nature-based solutions
- Use nature/natural processes that support biodiversity to address the challenges related to climate change, water management (including flood management) and land degradation;
- Have respect for and/or improve the specific environmental and ecological characteristics of the area (e.g. the topography, the type of landscape, the local plant and animal life, …);
- Incorporate those natural processes into the surrounding area and environment;
- Implement those natural processes in a way that is consistent with other actions undertaken to address these challenges (e.g. rehabilitate native plant species around water amenities that are set up to improve water management, …);
- Strengthen ecological connectivity between nature-based solutions and surrounding natural areas.
Possible initiatives in which the project is involved :

Long-term maintenance
Long-term maintenance and management is carried out by citizens for private plots and by the municipality for public plots.
Benefits
Ponds are essential habitats for many species of amphibians, insects and plants. However, these areas have largely disappeared from the landscape, giving way to urbanised or cultivated spaces. Restoring these habitats therefore means making room for all this disappearing fauna and flora.
Ponds also directly benefit local residents. Some of the water bodies created can act as a buffer in the event of heavy rainfall and facilitate water infiltration into the groundwater. In addition, ponds and their vegetation help to limit the “heat island” effect in summer by cooling the surrounding area.
