Opération Ré-création

Bringing nature into school playgrounds.
Developing the green-blue network

The project

A tree-lined playground with tunnels and slides, a pond and an educational vegetable garden, varied flooring, a quiet green corner, an educational garden and climbing frames… Many schools in Brussels dream of having a playground like this in the heart of the city!
In 2021, Brussels Environment, in collaboration with perspective.brussels, successfully launched the Ré-création project to green school playgrounds, making them more user-friendly and of higher quality. Twenty schools were selected and will be supported over several years in all stages of the project. 2022 marked the end of the school playground design phase.

Project location

Brussels

Contribution(s)

20 buildings and/or infrastructures

Project costs

More than 500.000 €

Participant(s)

Between 2021 and 2022, participating schools worked on designing their new playgrounds. Pupils, teaching staff, school management, technical maintenance teams, parents and others specified their needs and wishes. Partner architects gathered and transformed their visions into development plans, taking into account the constraints.
In 2023 and 2024, the schools and their decision-making bodies (local authorities, non-profit organisations, language communities) launched their public procurement process for the work, with the help of partner architects. All schools have contributed or will contribute to part of the budget for the work.

How are the  criteria of the objective met?

Buildings and infrastructures

  • As little alteration of the initial landscape as possible /as much naturalness as possible to replace grey and concrete surfaces (e.g. green roofs and walls, greening the surroundings, incorporating the existing landscape into the infrastructure);
  • Respect and/or improve the specific ecological characteristics of the area (e.g. the topography, the type of landscape, the local plant and animal life) to effectively replace the gray/concrete surface;
  • Incorporate the amenities into the surrounding area and environment;
  • Use native species/subspecies that are more resilient and resistant to climate change, if appropriate;
  • Incorporate elements that are suitable for the local biodiversity (e.g. birdhouses suitable for the bird species on site, insect houses at an appropriate height, appropriate vegetation types);
  • Provide amenities with sufficient space/length/thickness to ensure the creation of habitats, green-blue areas and veins.

Opération Ré-création

Long-term maintenance

Schools are supported in creating a participatory approach to maintaining their school grounds. They will receive maintenance sheets for each area and a schedule of tasks, as well as support in using the grounds as a learning tool (maintenance can be part of the learning process), and specific training depending on the facilities (vegetable garden, pond, fruit trees, etc.).

Benefits

The three objectives of the Ré-création project:

  • Well-being: positively impact the well-being of pupils and teaching staff by creating friendly play areas for everyone, in order to reduce tensions in the playground.
  • Biodiversity: strengthen contact with nature in the city, give pupils the opportunity to play in nature and observe it. Greening grey spaces to cool the playground during heatwaves, a phenomenon that is set to increase in the coming years.
  • Opening up to the neighbourhood: opening up certain schools to the neighbourhood outside school hours and, in doing so, expanding the range of green spaces available to the people of Brussels.

An event in October 2022 marked the end of the participatory design phase. The plans for the future school playgrounds were unveiled. Workshops were organised on the design process, the educational use of natural features and how to approach the school from the outside. It was a moment rich in exchanges and discoveries.
