Nature-inclusive design approach for world’s first artificial energy island
De Wase forest renovation
The project
With the Leader project De Wase forest renovation, we want to increase biodiversity and improve the forest soil. The coniferous forests in the Waasland region are very vulnerable due to a combination of drought, diseases and impoverished soil. It is necessary to revitalise them with a sophisticated mix of tree species, planting methods and soil improvers.
This project aims to:
- increase biodiversity to achieve a healthier and more resilient forest ecosystem resilient to climate change for 30 ha of forest
- improve the forest soil on poor sandy soils so that coniferous forests are more resistant to climate change through the application of rock flour to the clumps (= groups of trees that provide for rejuvenation) that will be planted + spreading of rock flour on clumps planted in recent years. A total of 55 ha of forest where the forest floor will be improved.
- increase knowledge about climate-adaptive forest management (‘forest renovation’) so that forest transformation is more likely to succeed in all forests. A total of 4 trainings for forest owners and 2 trainings for professionals will be organised.

This is a Leader project with support from Europe, Flanders and Province of East Flanders. Bosgroep Oost-Vlaanderen is promoter of the project. Province of East Flanders is a partner and provides financial support. The Wase municipalities of Lochristi, Lokeren, Stekene, Sint-Gillis-Waas, Waasmunster, Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht are co-promoters: they provide financial support and also help spread the message among citizens and forest owners in their municipality.
How are the criteria of the objective met?
Primäre Produktions-gebiete
- Develop the land by incorporating biodiversity and provide an area dedicated to biodiversity (e.g. additional flowerbeds, absence/reduction of tillage/mowing/management in a certain area, insect hotel, reorganization of mining sites).
- Have respect for and/or improve the environmental and ecological characteristics of the area.
- As much naturalness as possible/as little alteration as possible of the surrounding environment (landscape, quality of water, of soil, …).
- Promote the preservation of green and blue areas by limiting the expansion of land use.
- Einbindung dieser Praktiken in die Umgebung (z. B. Förderung der ökologischen Kontinuität), um ihre negativen Auswirkungen auf den Boden zu verringern.
Possible initiatives in which the project is involved :

Long-term maintenance
After the planting of the gabions and the application of the stone flour, forest owners can still turn to De Bosgroep through its regular operation for maintenance and monitoring of the planting in the coming years. For example, for exempting the clumps the first few years after planting.
Benefits
The benefits of climate-robust, biodiverse forests are a great added value for the Waasland region, both ecologically and socially. Via this project, we want to motivate the Waasland forest owners to adapt their forests now so that they are better able to cope with tomorrow’s climate extremes. Just as you renovate your house so that it can last a long time.
