The city of Genk’s ambition is to make the Stiemervalley a green-blue landscape gem that connects people, city and nature.
BOOST
The project
With BOOST, Bosgroep Oost-Vlaanderen wants to give private foresters extra encouragement through a grant for forest extension projects on private land. This way, we want to realise more forest together. After all, the province of East Flanders has a very low forest index (5.5% versus 11% for Flanders as a whole).
Moreover, BOOST gives everyone the chance to actively help build a greener and healthier East Flanders. Because with every euro that ends up in our fund, the Bosgroep creates new forest in our province.

BOOST is an initiative of Bosgroep Oost-Vlaanderen vzw, and took shape thanks to the support of Europe, the Flemish Government and Province of East Flanders. Currently, BOOST only receives financial support from the Province of East Flanders.
How are the criteria of the objective met?
Nature-based solutions
- Use nature/natural processes that support biodiversity to address the challenges related to climate change, water management (including flood management) and land degradation.
- Have respect for and/or improve the specific environmental and ecological characteristics of the area (e.g. the topography, the type of landscape, the local plant and animal life, …).
- Incorporate those natural processes into the surrounding area and environment.
- Implement those natural processes in a way that is consistent with other actions undertaken to address these challenges (e.g. rehabilitate native plant species around water amenities that are set up to improve water management, …).
- Strengthen ecological connectivity between nature-based solutions and surrounding natural areas.
Possible initiatives in which the project is involved :

Long-term maintenance
After planting, forest owners can turn to de Bosgroep through its regular operation for maintenance and monitoring of plantings. Moreover, there is also the legal obligation that the plantation must remain forest and the necessary measures must be taken to this end.
Benefits
The importance of forests is undeniable. In the fight against the climate and biodiversity crisis, forest expansion is a must. Forests provide a range of ecosystem services, the list is almost endless. They remove CO2 from the air and convert it into oxygen, they provide cooling in summer, they are a natural buffer against flooding or erosion, they are a source of wood, food and drinking water, they purify water and air, they are a home for countless plants and animals, thus contributing to increasing biodiversity, …
But in addition to these producing and regulating ecosystem services, the socio-recreational importance of forests should not be underestimated either. The positive effect of forests on our physical and mental well-being has already been proven several times.

Wetlands4Cities
Wetlands aims to install five urban wetlands in Flanders and turn them into biodiversity hotspots, which act as natural climate buffers.
