Verwandlung grauer Schulgelände in lebendige Lernumgebungen.
Facade garden Blankenberge
The project
The works were part of the reconstruction of an existing street with a very limited space/profile, where pedestrians (school environment), cyclists and cars all had to be accommodated. So there was not much space left for greenery. A creative solution was sought in order to still give the area a qualitative green interpretation.
Space was sought at the intersection near an existing rundown square. The existing side wall of the school was seen as an ideal place to create a vertical garden. Participation was initiated with the school in order to realise this.

A cooperation agreement was concluded with the school regarding the use of the side facade. Farys and the City of Blankenberge are the clients of this project and Plantec was the designer.
How are the criteria of the objective met?
Gebäude und Infrastrukturen
- So wenig Veränderung der ursprünglichen Landschaft wie möglich / so viel Natürlichkeit wie möglich, um graue und betonierte Flächen zu ersetzen (e.g. Dach- und Wandbegrünung, Begrünung der Umgebung, Einbeziehung der bestehenden Landschaft in die Infrastruktur);
- Einbindung der Einrichtungen in die Umgebung und das Umfeld;
- Gegebenenfalls Verwendung einheimischer Arten/Unterarten, die widerstandsfähiger und resistenter gegenüber dem Klimawandel sind;
- Provide amenities with sufficient space/length/thickness to ensure the creation of habitats, green-blue areas and veins.
Possible initiatives in which the project is involved :
Long-term maintenance
Reuse of rainwater was an important aspect to minimise the cost of watering, but obviously fits very well into the vision of sustainable water use.
A creative approach was taken to accommodate the techniques (buffer tank, electricity, fertilisation, etc.) in a technical room. This was built into a seating area on the square. Underneath the square was room for a SHEW tank and water counter well.
2-yearly maintenance: inspection of watering system, refilling of fertiliser, replacement of dead plants. In case of failure of sprinkler system, city and supplier receive automatic notification. The annual cost of maintenance is about 6,000 euros.
Benefits
- Reuse of rainwater.
- Design of public realm within very limited available space.
- Creation of biodiversity habitat in the city.
- Absorption of CO2.
- Noise attenuation of ambient urban noise.
